Athens is widely acknowledged as the cradle of western civilization and the birthplace of democracy due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 4th and 5th centuries BC on the rest of the European continent. Heritage of the classical era of Greece is still evident in the Athens city. There are numbers of ancient monuments, works of arts and places of interests including Parthenon on the Acropolis, which is regarded as the key landmark of early Western Civilization. The city has large number of Roman and Byzantine monuments. Athens was the venue for the first modern-day Olympic Games held in 1896.
