Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. The city has a population of 555,000 as of 2008. Vilnius is currently the European capital of Culture. The name of the city seems to have been derived from the river Vilnia. In 1990, Lithuania became Republic of Lithuania after its independence from Soviet Union. Today, Vilnius has become a rapidly growing European City.

Vilnius is situated in southeastern Lithuania at the confluence of rivers Vilnia and Neris. Climate of Vilnius is humid continental, with an average January temperature of -4.9 Celsius and 17 Celsius in July. Summers are warm and humid but winters are very cold. Vilnius’ rivers often freeze during winter seasons. Lakes surrounding Vilnius are almost always permanently frozen during winter months. Frozen lakes are popular for ice-fishing, where the fishermen drill holes in the ice to catch fish with baited hooks. Vilnius is a cosmopolitan city with a diverse cultural heritage. The town is also famous for its diverse architecture. Vilnius Castle Complex, Cathedral Square, Royal Palace of Lithuania, Lithuanian Art Museum, National Museum of Lithuania, The House of the Signatories, The Museum of Genocide Victims and National Library of Lithuania are some of the places of special interests.

Minsk is the capital and largest city of Belarus. Minsk is the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). With a population of about 1.8 million, Minsk is the administrative center Minsk Province and Minsk District. Minsk is the economic capital and major industrial center of Belarus.

Minsk is located on the southeastern slopes of Minsk Hills. Initially, it was founded on the hills however; in the 20th century, relatively flat plains in southeast were also included in Minsk. Western part of the city is almost hilly. It has a warm summer humid continental climate due to its location between the strong influence of the mist air of Atlantic Ocean and the dry air of the Eurasian landmass. Average January temperature is around -6 Celsius and average July temperature is about 17 Celsius. The air is often moist with a humidity content of 80-90%. Although historically, Minsk is the city of many languages but Russian is the official and most commonly spoken language. English and German are the main two international languages spoken in Minsk. There are nine administrative districts in Minsk. It house number of museums, theaters, churches, libraries and cultural centers dating back to 19th century.
