Capital city of Latvia, Riga is situated on the Baltic Sea on the mouth of the river Daugava. It is the largest city in the Baltic States. The city is well known for its German Art Nouveau Architecture, which has been considered as unparalleled anywhere in the world by UNESCO and thus the city has been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following Perestroika, which led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Latvia became an independent country in 1991. Immediately there after, Latvia joined the United Nations as an independent country. In 2004, Latvia joined NATO and European Union.

The climate of Riga is between maritime and humid continental, January and February being the coldest months with an average temperature of -6 and warm and humid summers with an average temperature of 18 Celsius. Fogs and snowfalls are very common in Riga. Celsius The city is the home to Lutheran Church, the largest church in the Baltic States, Riga Castle, which has a museum displaying Latvian History and the President’ official residence, Saint Peter’s Church, St. James’ Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Powder Tower, wooden architecture, Ethnographic open air museum and Riga Circus, among other places of special interests.
