Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. The city has a population of 555,000 as of 2008. Vilnius is currently the European capital of Culture. The name of the city seems to have been derived from the river Vilnia. In 1990, Lithuania became Republic of Lithuania after its independence from Soviet Union. Today, Vilnius has become a rapidly growing European City.

Vilnius is situated in southeastern Lithuania at the confluence of rivers Vilnia and Neris. Climate of Vilnius is humid continental, with an average January temperature of -4.9 Celsius and 17 Celsius in July. Summers are warm and humid but winters are very cold. Vilnius’ rivers often freeze during winter seasons. Lakes surrounding Vilnius are almost always permanently frozen during winter months. Frozen lakes are popular for ice-fishing, where the fishermen drill holes in the ice to catch fish with baited hooks. Vilnius is a cosmopolitan city with a diverse cultural heritage. The town is also famous for its diverse architecture. Vilnius Castle Complex, Cathedral Square, Royal Palace of Lithuania, Lithuanian Art Museum, National Museum of Lithuania, The House of the Signatories, The Museum of Genocide Victims and National Library of Lithuania are some of the places of special interests.
