Sofia is the capital and largest city of Republic of Bulgaria. The population of Sofia is 1.4 million in the Capital Municipality. Sofia is located in western Bulgaria at the foot of the mountain Massif Vitosha. It is the cultural, educational, political and administrative center of Bulgaria. History of Sofia can be traced back to 7000 years. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
Sofia is well known for its numerous mineral and thermal springs. The city has a humid continental climate, August being the hottest month and January being the coldest month. The city is divided into 24 municipalities. Its total population of about 1.2 million is made up of 96% ethnic Bulgarians. Turkish, Russian, Armenian and Greek are the other ethnic groups in Sofia city. Sofia is famous for its extensive nightlife with many different nightclubs, live venues, pubs and restaurants. The city has hosted numbers of world star concerts. Sofia has numbers of national museums and art galleries. Besides the museums and other places of special interests, Sofia is also well known for Boyana Church, UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is one of the most favored filming grounds for several international film productions.
